PHOENIX — A possibly impaired driver of a car that rolled over on a Phoenix freeway early Sunday morning is facing first-degree murder charges after one of the passengers in the car died.

Officials say 21-year-old Marcellos Matthews died in the rollover crash at the Interstate 17 and Interstate 10 interchange. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, 23-year-old Marquese Matthews was arrested and booked into the 4th Avenue Jail.

It is unclear how or if Marcellos and Marquese Matthews are related.

DPS said two of the three occupants in the car were ejected when the car left the roadway, rolled and struck a palm tree around 12:30 a.m. at I-17 southbound and I-10 westbound.

According to a spokesperson with the Phoenix Fire Department, a 30-year-old man was transported to a nearby hospital. Marquese Matthews refused to go to the hospital for treatment.

This was a single car crash, officials said. Investigators believe impairment was a factor.

The on-ramp at the interchange was partially obstructed but the scene was cleared up hours later, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.
