Gas station roof collapses as hail, rain pour over the Valley in Monday storm

The intense bouts of rain led to an awning collapsing at a gas station in Glendale.

Severe weather moved in across the Valley starting around 2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon. 

ADOT captured the hail falling on the 101 at the SR 51 overpass. ADOT warned drivers as the storm headed west the commute on US 60 and State Route 87 and Loop 202 may be affected.  

The National Weather Service reported the storm was expected to hit areas in Buckeye, Avondale, north Phoenix, Glendale and other parts of the northwest Valley.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning in Mesa, Scottsdale and Tempe until 3:30 p.m. 

At the height of the storm, flooding was a major concern. NWS issued a flood advisory for Maricopa and Pinal counties. Some areas that were expect to have some flooding were Mesa, Apache Junction, East Mesa, Granite Reef Dam, Falcon Field Airport, Usery Mountain Park and the Superstition Springs Mall.  

The storm also managed to stir up a funnel cloud. 12 News Weather Watcher Chad Sauerbry caught a glimpse of it while it loomed over Paradise Valley. 

Intense rain fall took down an overhang at a gas station in Glendale. Police and fire responded to a gas station at 67th Avenue and Bell Road after rain water accumulated on an awning and collapsed onto two cars parked at the pumps. One person received minor injuries.
