PD: Man shoots and kills man threatening people with 'large knife' in Phoenix neighborhood

Police say responding officers found a knife in the victim's hand.

PHOENIX — Phoenix police have released the identity of the man who was shot and killed by another man Sunday after he was reportedly threatening people with a knife. 

The Phoenix Police Department said the shooting occurred around 2 p.m. in the area of 26th Drive and Campbell Avenues, just off Interstate 17.

Officers found 28-year-old Dontae Ray McGinty suffering from a gunshot wound. He died at the scene.  

The suspected shooter is a 25-year-old man. Police say he cooperated with investigators.

Witnesses told police McGinty was threatening others with a large knife. Some witnesses reported seeing the man shoot McGinty after he tried to stab another person. 

Police say responding officers found a knife in the victim's hand.   

The suspect called 911 after he shot McGinty. He was taken into custody, questioned and later released. 

The investigation is ongoing.
