Suspect dead after police officer shoots him at Scottsdale hospital

Police said 27-year-old Joshua Greenleaf was brandishing a rifle and pulled a knife on officers outside the emergency department.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A man is dead after a confrontation with police in front of HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center Tuesday evening. The suspect was identified on Wednesday as 27-year-old Joshua Greenleaf.

Police said a call came in shortly before 7 p.m. of Greenleaf outside a white pickup truck making threats with a rifle near the emergency department. 

Unarmed hospital security guards stepped in and were able to get the rifle away from him.

When police arrived, the Greenleaf pulled out a knife and advanced toward officers, police said. 

An officer fired his gun, and Greenleaf went to the ground. 

Hospital staff treated him, but he was later pronounced dead.  

Greenleaf was involved in a domestic violence relationship with his ex-girlfriend and had made suicidal comments. 

He was at the HonorHealth Osborn location in an attempt to locate his ex-girlfriend. 

The investigation is ongoing.
