Sexual assault suspect shot, killed by Chandler police

Officers received calls about an armed man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman. He was later identified as 44-year-old Tyson Cobb.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — A man is dead after a police shooting in Chandler, the city's police department said.

The shooting happened Sunday morning at an apartment complex after officers received reports of a sexual assault.

Officers responded to the apartment where the sexual assault was reported where they learned that the suspect also lived in the same apartment complex, a department information officer told 12News. The man barricaded himself inside his apartment when officers attempted to question him.

The man allegedly got onto the roof of the apartment complex during the barricade situation, when officers say they began chasing following him from the ground. The suspect tried to break into other apartment complexes from the roof but was unsuccessful.

Two police officers shot the man when he jumped to the ground from the second story, still armed with a knife, officers said.

He was later identified as 44-year-old Tyson Cobb. Authorities say Cobb lived at the apartment but didn't know the victim.

Officers said Cobb was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital. No officers or other community members were injured in the incident.

Police have yet to release the following details:

  • The identity of the responding officers
