Laveen man handed 15-year prison sentence for sexually abusing child

PHOENIX — A Laveen man was handed a 15-year prison sentence earlier in March for sexually abusing a child, the Arizona branch of the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.

Fred Damien Acunia, 27, of Laveen, a member of the Gila River Indian Community, was sentenced to 188 months in prison followed by lifetime supervision.

The abuse took place from Nov. 26, 2020 to Nov. 25, 2021. The victim was under 12 years old at the time, officials said. Acunia pleaded guilty last August.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Gila River Police Department collaborated on the investigation.

Calls to Silent Witness are answered 24/7 by a live person and submitted tips are accepted at all times. Submitted tips are then sent to the detective(s) in charge of the specific case. 

Individuals who submit tips that lead to an arrest or indictment in the case can get a reward of up to $1,000.
