DOUGLAS, Ariz. — A wide-reaching molestation case has ended with a Douglas man facing 17 years in prison for crimes against children, the city police department announced.

In April of 2022, Douglas police launched an investigation after allegations of sex crimes began to circulate in the Douglas community. During the investigation, several young victims came forward and the suspect was eventually identified as Douglas resident 30-year-old Javier Bernardo Mejia.

Mejia was arrested and in the fall of that year was indicted on 15 counts including molestation of a child, sexual contact with a minor, sexual assault and filming other similar crimes. One count involved using minors in drug offenses, police said.

After entering a plea deal, Mejia was sentenced on April 12 to 17 years in prison with lifetime probation and sex offender registration upon his release. The case was prosecuted by the Cochise County Attorney's Office.
