Scottsdale police can now kick people out of short-term rentals if a party gets out of hand

The new rules were approved unanimously by the city council Monday evening. Here are the details on what changed.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The City of Scottsdale has approved new rules for short-term rentals, which are aimed at reducing noise and out-of-control parties that take place at the properties.

Three new rules were approved unanimously by the city council on Monday night.

The first will make anyone who promotes a party that grows out of control at a short-term rental the responsible party under the city code. This will help the police hold the correct people responsible for parties that cause a nuisance to neighbors.

The second will give Scottsdale police the right to remove any non-residents from a property after a party has been declared a nuisance. Until now, this was difficult to do under the city code.

The third prohibits minors from renting a short-term property, which will allow the city to better enforce violations when necessary.

The city began looking at these new rules after calls about out-of-control parties increased 73% over the past year. More than half of those calls were made to properties that are short-term rentals.

The city says more than 2,200 residents responded to an online form after the rules were drafted and they showed widespread support for the changes.

These city ordinances will apply to all residential properties, not just properties that are up for rent.
